           History of Stamford Brass

Introduction to the Band

Stamford Brass is an amateur brass band currently contesting in the 2nd section and offering musical opportunities to musicians throughout the south Lincolnshire / north Cambridgeshire area . The band was formed nearly 120 years ago and has maintained a presence in the Stamford area for all of that time except for a brief spell when it was disbanded during the 1939 -1945 war period .

The band is completely self-financing, earning its money through concert performances and any other fund-raising activities thought up by the members. The money earned is used to buy new instruments, music, contest fees, transport and other sundry expenses.

Whilst the band is reliant on the patronage of the public for its financial viability the members do their best to reciprocate by attending all Civic occasions in Stamford,  giving concerts throughout the area and by supporting many worthwhile charitable causes.

The band always maintains a busy schedule and throughout the year we are heard and seen by many thousands of people.

Interesting projects in recent years have included: -

Ten members of the band played music for the garden party scene in the BBC Television production of “The Buccaneers”.

Three members played some of the backing tracks for a BBC series of Children's programmes called “The Spider”.

The band has performed with English and Welsh Male Voice Choirs in Stamford, Peterborough Cathedral and Grimsthorpe Castle in recent years.

Our Christmas concert for 2001 featured the first ever performance of Howard Blake's 'The Snowman' - arranged by our bass trombonist Barry Strickle. A pianist, a narrator and The BBC Choirgirl of the year joined the band in the performance to a full house at Stamford School.  The concert raised over £2,000 which was shared between the band and Macmillan Nurses, our chosen charity. We remain the only band in the world permitted to perform this work.
